New York City’s mayor has announced that a recent enforcement of visible tip options on delivery apps has generated $104 million in extra tips for workers since January.
The crackdown began after the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection forced delivery platforms to display tip buttons at checkout, a move that followed the earlier shutdown of the Motoclick service.
According to a DCWP report, the average tip per delivery doubled from $1.18 to $2.29, resulting in an estimated $104 million in additional tips for workers since January.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the initiative has already benefited thousands of couriers and warned that further enforcement actions are planned to ensure compliance.
The policy change is expected to reshape the tipping landscape for gig‑economy workers and could prompt similar measures in other cities.
