The National Medical Commission has approved an additional 13,636 MBBS seats for the 2026 NEET UG counselling, expanding medical college capacity nationwide.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) announced on Monday that 13,636 new MBBS seats will be made available during the NEET UG 2026 counselling round. The increase applies to government, private and deemed‑to‑be medical colleges across all states, aiming to address the persistent shortfall of medical seats relative to the growing number of aspirants.
The additional seats are expected to be distributed based on each institution's existing intake capacity and infrastructure compliance, as per NMC guidelines. Candidates who have qualified the NEET UG 2026 examination will now have a broader set of options during the centralized counselling process.
Education authorities anticipate that the expanded seat pool will help reduce the waiting list for medical admissions and improve the doctor‑to‑population ratio in underserved regions. The NMC has instructed participating colleges to submit their revised seat matrices before the next counselling phase begins later this month.
