NITI Aayog has released a framework calling for increased domestic research and development and collaborations with universities as India gears up to build 1.5 GW of new data centres.

NITI Aayog has unveiled a new framework aimed at accelerating India’s data centre capacity to 1.5 gigawatts. The plan stresses the need for stronger domestic research and development initiatives and closer ties with universities to supply skilled talent and innovative solutions.

The framework comes as the country seeks to reduce dependence on imported technology and boost its digital infrastructure. By fostering academic‑industry collaboration, the agency hopes to create a pipeline of engineers and researchers who can design energy‑efficient and secure data‑centre architectures.

Officials say that the strategy will also encourage public‑private partnerships, enabling private firms to invest in R&D while benefiting from academic expertise. The goal is to position India as a competitive player in the global data‑centre market while ensuring that the growth is sustainable and technologically self‑reliant.
