On this day 35 years ago, Nirvana filmed the legendary 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' music video for less than $50,000, a budget that helped shape the grunge era.
On this day, Nirvana filmed the iconic music video for their breakthrough single "Smells Like Teen Spirit".
The video, directed by Samuel Bayer, was shot in a high‑school gym in Washington state and cost less than $50,000.
The modest budget forced the crew to rely on raw, chaotic visuals: a crowded gym, broken mirrors, and the band performing in a cramped space.
Despite—or because of—its low cost, the video became a defining image of 1990s alternative rock and helped propel the album "Nevermind" to worldwide success.
The production’s frugal approach remains a reference point for music‑video budgets even today.
