The Assam Chief Minister highlighted that the NHPC reservoir played a crucial role in preventing severe flooding in the districts of Dhemaji and Lakhimpur.
Heavy monsoon rains in early July triggered rising water levels across Assam, putting the districts of Dhemaji and Lakhimpur at risk of widespread flooding.
The NHPC reservoir, located near the Brahmaputra basin, was opened to release excess water, thereby reducing pressure on local rivers and preventing a potential deluge.
Chief Minister Sarma praised the reservoir’s timely operation, stating that it "helped protect the districts from worse flooding" and saved thousands of residents from displacement.
Officials say the incident underscores the importance of maintaining and upgrading flood‑control infrastructure across the state.
