The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a revised toll calculation method that could reduce highway tolls by up to 40% for users.
Under the new formula, tolls will be calculated based on the actual distance travelled and the vehicle category, rather than the current flat rate system. The change aims to make toll charges more equitable and reflective of road usage.
Early estimates suggest that drivers of heavy goods vehicles could see savings of up to ₹1,500 on a 200‑km stretch, while passenger cars might benefit by around ₹200 per trip.
The new rule will be implemented in phases, with a pilot launch on selected corridors in September, before a nationwide rollout in early 2025.
