The National Highways Authority of India has rolled out a barrier‑free tolling system on the Tambaram‑Tindivanam stretch, allowing vehicles to pass without stopping at toll plazas.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced the launch of a barrier‑free tolling system on the Tambaram‑Tindivanam highway in Tamil Nadu. Under the new scheme, vehicles will no longer need to stop at traditional toll plazas; instead, electronic toll collection will be used to charge drivers automatically.

The initiative aims to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow on the busy 70‑kilometre stretch that connects Chennai’s southern suburb of Tambaram with the town of Tindivanam. By eliminating manual toll collection, NHAI expects smoother travel times and lower fuel consumption for commuters.

NHAI officials said the barrier‑free system will be operational from the start of the next month, following a pilot phase that tested the technology on a segment of the highway. The project is part of a broader effort to modernise tolling across India’s national highways.

Transport and logistics operators have welcomed the change, noting that it will cut delays and reduce the need for additional toll staff. The new system will also provide better data on traffic volumes, helping authorities plan future infrastructure upgrades.
