The National Green Tribunal has exposed serious irregularities in a tree‑planting drive on the Kota bypass, revealing that 10,000 saplings were never planted and that forged invoices were used to claim the work was completed.

On Thursday, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) announced that it had uncovered serious irregularities in a tree‑planting drive on the Kota bypass in Rajasthan. The tribunal found that the project, which was supposed to plant 10,000 saplings, had no surviving trees and that the reported figures were grossly inflated.

Investigators discovered a series of forged invoices and a mismatch between the number of plants reported and the actual count. The NGT also highlighted that the planting effort failed to meet basic horticultural standards, raising questions about the competence of the contractors involved.

In response, the NGT has directed the relevant authorities to launch a formal inquiry into the alleged misuse of the government‑CAMPA fund, which was earmarked for the project. The tribunal warned that any evidence of corruption could lead to criminal prosecution and the recovery of misappropriated funds.

The findings underscore the need for tighter oversight of public green‑initiatives and could prompt a review of how such schemes are monitored and audited across Rajasthan.
