The Indian government has notified a new Social Security Code that consolidates various existing laws related to provident fund, gratuity, maternity benefit and other welfare schemes. The code seeks to extend social security coverage to workers in the unorganised sector, including those employed on a casual or contractual basis.
In Tamil Nadu, a significant portion of the workforce is engaged in informal employment. Analysts say the code could bring these workers under a unified framework, requiring them to contribute to and become eligible for benefits like pension, medical care and maternity support.
Employer associations and worker groups in the state have begun reviewing the provisions to understand the implications for wage structures and compliance costs. Government officials have indicated that detailed guidelines and awareness campaigns will be issued to facilitate smooth implementation.
