A modern bridge is being built in Neriamangalam, Idukki, as the historic British-era crossing is slated for demolition.

The Kerala Public Works Department has approved the construction of a new concrete bridge over the Periyar River at Neriamangalam in Idukki district. The structure will replace the existing bridge, a relic from the British colonial period that has served the region for over a century. Officials say the old bridge, while historically significant, no longer meets modern safety standards and restricts the growing traffic flow on the national highway.

The new bridge, designed to accommodate two lanes of vehicular traffic and pedestrian pathways, is expected to be completed within 18 months. Project funds are being sourced from the state’s infrastructure development budget, with additional support from central government schemes aimed at improving connectivity in hilly terrains.

Local residents and heritage groups have been consulted, and while there is concern over the loss of a colonial-era landmark, authorities have pledged to document the old bridge before demolition and consider preserving elements as part of a heritage display at a nearby site.
