Botanists have documented a previously unknown Begonia species in the Keyi Panyor district of Arunachal Pradesh, adding to the region’s rich flora.
Researchers conducting field surveys in the remote hills of Keyi Panyor district have recorded a hitherto unknown species of Begonia. The plant, collected from a moist, shaded understory, exhibits distinctive leaf morphology that sets it apart from known Indian Begonia taxa.
The discovery underscores the high biodiversity value of Arunachal Pradesh, a state that hosts several endemic flora due to its varied topography and climate. Scientists say the new species could provide insights into evolutionary adaptation in montane ecosystems.
Authorities from the state forest department have been notified, and steps are being taken to document the location precisely and assess any conservation needs. Further taxonomic work, including DNA analysis, is planned to formally describe the species in a peer‑reviewed journal.
