NALSAR University’s Square Circle Clinic has combined artistic expression with legal advocacy to draw attention to the growing death row crisis in India.

The Square Circle Clinic, part of NALSAR University of Law, has launched a multidisciplinary project that fuses visual art with legal research to highlight the plight of inmates on death row across India. The initiative, described by clinic staff as a “creative legal forum,” uses murals, installations, and interactive displays to convey the human stories behind the statistics. According to the clinic, more than 1,000 people are currently awaiting execution in the country, a figure that has sparked debate over the efficacy and morality of capital punishment. By bringing these narratives into public spaces, the clinic aims to foster dialogue among law students, activists, and the broader community about reforms needed in the criminal justice system. The project is slated to run through the end of the year, with plans for touring exhibitions in major Indian cities.
