Nalanda district jail in Bihar released a prisoner on September 24 after a verification error. The inmate who was handed over to the authorities was Chanddeep Chauhan, who had been under consideration for release, while Satish Chauhan, the intended beneficiary, remained in custody.
The jail administration acknowledged that the release order was processed without proper cross‑checking of the names, leading to the wrongful discharge of Chanddeep Chauhan.
Following the incident, the prison superintendent and three senior officials were suspended pending an internal inquiry. Officials said the suspension reflects the seriousness of the lapse and aims to restore public confidence in the correctional system.
The department has announced a review of release protocols to prevent similar mistakes in the future.
