Nagaur businessman attempts suicide over soaring money‑lender debt, now up to ₹60 lakh

Premprakash Bihani, a 54‑year‑old businessman from Nagaur, was found unconscious after attempting to take his own life at his residence. According to the police report, he had ingested a harmful substance in a desperate bid to escape mounting financial pressure.

Bihani alleges that he originally borrowed roughly ₹15‑16 lakh from local moneylenders. He claims the lenders applied interest on the accrued interest, pushing the total liability to somewhere between ₹50 lakh and ₹60 lakh within a short period.

Paramedics revived Bihani at the scene and he was later shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Nagaur police have opened a case to investigate the alleged usurious practices of the moneylenders and to determine whether any criminal provisions under the Indian Penal Code have been violated.

Money‑lending at high rates is a recurring concern in parts of Rajasthan, where many small traders and farmers rely on informal credit sources. Authorities have previously warned that excessive interest can lead to severe distress, including self‑harm, and have urged lenders to adhere to the legal ceiling of 24% per annum.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not disclosed the identities of the lenders pending further inquiry.
