An official report reveals that Nagaland has experienced the steepest decline in forest cover across India over the past decade.
Nagaland has been identified as the state with the highest loss of forest cover in India over the last ten years, according to a recent statement from a government official. The report, released by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, highlights a significant reduction in the state's forested areas compared to the previous decade.
The decline is attributed to a combination of factors, including illegal logging, shifting cultivation, and expanding agricultural activities. Officials say that the rate of forest loss in Nagaland surpasses that of other northeastern states.
In response, authorities have pledged to strengthen enforcement of forest protection laws and to implement reforestation initiatives. They also plan to engage local communities in conservation efforts to curb further degradation.
The findings underscore the urgent need for targeted environmental policies in the region and raise concerns about the long-term ecological impact on Nagaland's biodiversity and climate resilience.
