The municipal and state government in Mumbai will observe an additional Diwali holiday on November 9, with all designated offices remaining closed for the day.
Mumbai’s municipal and state authorities have announced an extra public holiday on November 9 to extend the Diwali celebrations. The decision adds a second day off to the traditional Diwali break, allowing residents more time for festivities.
All government offices that normally operate under the municipal corporation and state departments will remain closed on the date. This includes administrative, revenue and public service desks that are part of the city’s official machinery.
Employees of the listed government bodies will receive the day off with full pay, as per the standard holiday policy for public servants. The closure does not automatically apply to private firms or non‑government institutions, which may choose their own schedule.
The extra holiday is expected to ease traffic and crowding in the city, as many families plan to travel or gather for the festival. Authorities have advised citizens to plan essential errands ahead of the holiday.
The announcement comes ahead of the main Diwali day, which falls later in the month, and reflects the city’s effort to accommodate cultural observances while maintaining essential services.
