Mumbai authorities have declared an air quality emergency after the city's PM2.5 levels spiked to hazardous levels, prompting restrictions on outdoor activities and urging residents to stay indoors.
On October 23, 2026, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) declared an air quality emergency as PM2.5 concentrations exceeded 250 µg/m³, the highest recorded in the city’s history. The alert follows a sharp rise in particulate matter linked to vehicular emissions, industrial activity and construction dust.
In response, city officials have imposed a ban on outdoor exercise, closed parks and restricted the use of public transport during peak hours. Residents are advised to keep windows shut, use air purifiers and wear N95 masks when outside.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has dispatched teams to monitor air quality and provide medical support to vulnerable groups. Health experts warn that prolonged exposure could increase respiratory and cardiovascular risks, especially among children, the elderly and those with pre‑existing conditions.
