The Mughal Road, a vital link between Srinagar and Kargil, was closed for a short period after the first snowfall of the season made the stretch hazardous.
The Mughal Road, stretching from Srinagar to Kargil through the Drass valley, is a key artery for trade and tourism in the region. On 12 October, the first heavy snowfall of the season blanketed the 115‑kilometre stretch, causing ice‑slick conditions on the mountain passes. In response, the Jammu & Kashmir Road Transport Department announced a temporary closure of the road to ensure the safety of motorists and emergency services. The closure is expected to last until the snow has been cleared and the road surface deemed safe, with authorities monitoring the situation closely. Travelers are advised to seek alternative routes via the Srinagar‑Kargil highway until the Mughal Road reopens.
