MSEDCL’s recent audit of Mumbai’s Bhandup circle uncovered unpaid electricity dues of roughly Rs 104 crore owed by about 300,000 consumers.

Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) carried out a verification exercise in the Bhandup circle of Mumbai and found that close to three lakh domestic and commercial consumers have accumulated unpaid electricity bills amounting to approximately Rs 104 crore.

The exercise is part of a wider crackdown on power‑bill defaults across the city. Officials said the dues have built up over several billing cycles and that the utility will now issue notices to the defaulters, warning of possible disconnections and legal steps if payments are not made.

MSEDCL has said it will follow its standard recovery procedures, including sending demand notices and, where necessary, initiating court actions. The company also urged consumers to clear outstanding amounts promptly to avoid interruption of supply.

The large figure highlights the growing challenge of unpaid electricity charges in Mumbai, prompting the utility to intensify collection drives in other circles as well.
