In the Cachar district of Assam, over 40 people were injured after a series of stray dog attacks, officials say. Authorities have raised concerns over a shortage of rabies vaccines to treat the victims.

On Tuesday, a spate of stray dog attacks in Cachar district left more than 40 residents with injuries ranging from minor bites to severe lacerations. The incidents, which occurred in and around the town of Silchar, were reported to the local police within hours.

Police officers responded to multiple calls and secured the affected areas. Victims were transported to nearby hospitals where they received first aid and were evaluated for rabies exposure.

Health officials have warned that the district is facing a shortage of rabies vaccines, a critical resource for post‑exposure prophylaxis. The shortage has prompted calls for additional supplies from state authorities.

A spokesperson for the Assam Health Department said the state will work with the central government to procure the necessary vaccines and to strengthen stray animal control measures in the region.
