A number of monkeys were found dead in a Chhattisgarh village, and locals allege that a village watchman was responsible for the killings.
Several dead monkeys were discovered in a remote village of Chhattisgarh on Monday, sparking alarm among residents who said the animals appeared to have been deliberately killed. The community quickly pointed to the village watchman, claiming he had the opportunity and motive to carry out the act.
Local elders said the watchman had been on duty at the time the bodies were found and that he had previously been involved in disputes over crop damage caused by the primates. No official statement has been released by the district police, but authorities have been notified and are expected to register a case under wildlife protection laws.
The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of wildlife in rural areas, where human‑animal conflict often escalates into violence. Animal‑rights groups have urged a thorough investigation and called for awareness programmes to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
