Citizens in Mohali are calling for the government to disburse pending assistance funds to local cattle shelters.
Citizens in Mohali, Punjab, have organized a protest demanding that the state government release the assistance money that has been earmarked for local cattle shelters. The demand follows reports that several shelters have been unable to purchase feed and medical supplies due to delayed disbursements.
The protest was led by representatives of the Mohali Animal Welfare Association, who cited a 30‑day delay in the release of funds that was originally scheduled for March. They argue that the delay is jeopardising the health of thousands of cattle housed in the shelters.
Government officials have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the delay, but a spokesperson for the Punjab Department of Animal Husbandry indicated that the funds are pending final approval and will be released once the paperwork is completed.
If the funds are not released soon, the shelters warn that they may have to shut down operations or relocate animals, which could lead to a surge in stray cattle in the city.
