The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) have launched a five‑year programme aimed at strengthening biodiversity governance across India.
New Delhi — The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the National Biodiversity Authority announced today the commencement of a five‑year project designed to reinforce biodiversity governance throughout the country. The initiative, spanning 2024‑2029, seeks to create a more coordinated framework for conserving India’s rich biological resources.
Key components of the programme include capacity‑building for state and local agencies, integration of biodiversity considerations into development planning, and the establishment of robust monitoring mechanisms. The project also aims to promote community participation and strengthen partnerships with research institutions and NGOs.
The scheme will be funded jointly by the two agencies, with implementation overseen by a steering committee comprising officials from MoEFCC, NBA and selected state departments. Officials anticipate that the programme will improve policy coherence, enhance on‑ground conservation outcomes and help India meet its international biodiversity commitments.
