The Ministry of Education has approved the establishment of five Centres of Excellence dedicated to the study and promotion of India's classical languages.
New Delhi – The Ministry of Education (MoE) has given the go‑ahead for five Centres of Excellence aimed at strengthening research, teaching and outreach in India's classical languages. The decision, announced in a recent circular, underscores the government's commitment to preserving linguistic heritage and fostering scholarly work in these ancient tongues.
Each centre will function as a hub for scholars, students and cultural practitioners, providing resources such as specialised libraries, digital archives and language labs. The MoE has earmarked funding for infrastructure, faculty appointments and collaborative projects with universities and research institutes.
The initiative is expected to boost academic interest in classical languages, support curriculum development, and promote community engagement through workshops, seminars and public events. The centres will operate under the oversight of the MoE’s Department of Higher Education, with periodic reviews to assess impact and resource utilization.
