The Election Commission has activated the Model Code of Conduct for upcoming civic elections, signalling possible suspension of free electricity and pension schemes and a pause in certain government recruitment drives.

The Election Commission of India has formally announced the activation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) as civic elections approach. Under the MCC, the government is required to refrain from announcing new welfare schemes or making policy changes that could influence voters.

One immediate implication highlighted by officials is the potential suspension of existing free electricity provisions and pension disbursements that are currently offered by state and local bodies. The rationale is to ensure a level playing field among political parties during the election period.

Additionally, the MCC may temporarily halt ongoing government recruitment processes, particularly those managed by municipal authorities, to prevent any perception of bias or undue advantage. Candidates for civil posts are advised to await further clarification from the respective recruitment boards.

Stakeholders, including political parties and civil society groups, have called for clear guidelines to minimize disruption to essential services while maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. The Election Commission has pledged to monitor compliance and address any grievances that arise during the code's enforcement.

The civic polls are slated to be conducted later this year, and the MCC will remain in force until the election results are officially declared, after which normal administrative activities are expected to resume.
