The Mizoram government announced a temporary relaxation of the Protected Area Permit rules during the winter months and Christmas celebrations, aiming to attract more visitors to the state.

Mizoram's tourism department has signaled a policy shift by easing the Protected Area Permit (PAP) requirements for the upcoming winter season and the Christmas festivities that follow. The move targets domestic and foreign travelers who have traditionally faced paperwork hurdles before entering the state's ecologically sensitive zones.

Under the new arrangement, tourists visiting during the winter months and the Christmas period will not need to obtain the standard PAP, simplifying travel plans and reducing processing time. The relaxation is limited to the festival window and is intended as a short‑term measure to test demand.

State officials said the decision is part of a broader strategy to showcase Mizoram's cultural heritage and natural attractions, such as its hill stations, tribal festivals and wildlife sanctuaries. By lowering entry barriers, the government hopes to increase footfall, generate revenue for local businesses and create seasonal employment opportunities.

If successful, the temporary PAP waiver could be extended or made permanent for future peak seasons, aligning Mizoram with other northeastern states that have recently liberalised tourism regulations.
