Mizoram pushes for higher arecanut farmer incomes through quality and processing

The Mizoram state government is focusing on improving the quality and processing of arecanut to secure better market returns for local growers.
Mizoram's agriculture department has announced a concerted effort to raise the earnings of arecanut growers by enhancing the crop's quality and establishing processing units. Officials say that better grading, timely harvesting and modern processing techniques will make the product more competitive in national and export markets.
The state plans to provide technical assistance to farmers, including training on pest management and post‑harvest handling. In addition, subsidies are being earmarked for small‑scale processing facilities that can add value through products such as sliced betel nut and oil.
By moving up the value chain, the government expects to reduce reliance on raw‑nut sales, which often fetch low prices, and to create new employment opportunities in rural areas. The initiative aligns with Mizoram's broader goal of diversifying its agricultural base and improving farmer livelihoods.
