A Mizoram government panel has identified significant trade and infrastructure challenges associated with the Kaladan Multi‑Modal Transit Transport Project and ongoing railway initiatives, urging corrective measures.
The state government of Mizoram convened a high‑level panel to review the progress of the Kaladan Multi‑Modal Transit Transport Project and parallel railway schemes. The panel, comprising officials from the transport, commerce and infrastructure departments, presented its findings in a report released earlier this week.\nThe review highlighted several bottlenecks that could impede the intended boost in cross‑border trade with Myanmar. Issues cited include inadequate customs facilities at the inland port, limited road connectivity to the project’s terminal, and delays in land acquisition for railway alignment.\nFunding gaps and coordination lapses between central ministries and the state were also flagged as critical constraints. The panel warned that without swift remedial action, the projected economic benefits of the Kaladan corridor and the new railway line could be substantially reduced.\nTo address the concerns, the panel recommended accelerating the construction of feeder roads, streamlining customs procedures, and establishing a joint task force to oversee project implementation. The state government said it would submit the recommendations to the central authorities for immediate consideration.
