A man in Mizoram has been detained by authorities on charges of poaching the state's protected serow species.
A Mizoram resident was arrested by state authorities on Thursday on allegations of poaching the serow, the state’s protected wildlife species.
The serow, a goat‑like ungulate native to the hills of Mizoram, is listed under the Wildlife (Protection) Act and is considered a vulnerable species.
Police say the arrest follows an investigation that uncovered evidence of illegal hunting in the forested areas of the state.
The accused faces potential charges under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, which can lead to imprisonment and fines.
Officials stated that the operation is part of a broader effort to curb wildlife poaching and protect Mizoram’s biodiversity.
