Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu clinched gold in the 64‑kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026, marking her third consecutive title and India’s first gold of the event.

Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 236 kg in the 64‑kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026, securing gold for India in the opening event of the Games.
The victory came after a strong performance in both the snatch and clean‑and‑jerk lifts, with Chanu surpassing her nearest rivals by a margin of 5 kg. The win not only gave India an early boost in the medal table but also set a new benchmark for Indian women in weightlifting.
Chanu’s coach, Suresh Kumar, praised her disciplined training and mental focus, noting that the athlete had been preparing for the Games with a rigorous schedule since the previous year. The win is expected to inspire a new generation of weightlifters across the country.
