The National Minorities Commission has issued a notice to Punjab’s Director General of Police, demanding his appearance on October 14 to address allegations that Sikh youth Mohanjit Singh Sheron faced police harassment and that his religious sentiments were hurt.

The National Minorities Commission (NMC) has taken formal cognizance of a complaint alleging that Sikh youth Mohanjit Singh Sheron was subjected to police harassment while in custody, an act said to have offended his religious sentiments. In response, the commission issued a summons to the Director General of Police (DG) of Punjab, directing him to appear before the commission on October 14.

The complaint, filed by the youth’s representatives, claims that the police detained Sheron without proper justification and used coercive methods that violated his fundamental rights. The NMC, tasked with safeguarding the interests of minority communities, said the matter warrants a thorough investigation to determine whether the actions of the police constituted a breach of law and an affront to Sikh religious feelings.

The commission’s notice underscores its authority to examine cases where minority rights are perceived to be infringed. It also signals that the DG will be required to provide a detailed account of the police actions, any internal inquiries undertaken, and steps taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The scheduled hearing on October 14 will allow the commission to assess the evidence, hear statements from both the complainant and the police, and decide on any further remedial measures. No additional details about the outcome have been released at this stage.
