Millions of Voters Removed from Draft Electoral Rolls in Delhi and Maharashtra

Around 4.75 million voters in Delhi and 20.7 million in Maharashtra have been excluded from the Summary of Ineligible Voters (SIR) draft list, officials said.
The Election Commission’s Summary of Ineligible Voters (SIR) draft list has shown a massive reduction in registered names, with 4.75 million voters in Delhi and 20.7 million in Maharashtra removed. The clean‑up exercise, part of the routine electoral roll revision ahead of upcoming polls, targets duplicate entries, deceased persons and other ineligible records.
Officials explained that the data was compiled after cross‑checking the existing rolls with death certificates, migration records and other verification sources. The removal figures reflect the scale of outdated entries in two of the country’s most populous jurisdictions.
Voters whose names have been omitted can file a correction request with the Election Commission. The process involves submitting proof of identity and residence, after which the commission reviews the application and, if satisfied, reinstates the name before the final roll is published.
The draft list will be made public for a limited period, allowing citizens to raise objections. Once the objection window closes, the final electoral roll will be frozen ahead of the scheduled elections.
