Microsoft has introduced advanced weather forecasting technology that could help Indian farmers plan sowing and irrigation more effectively.

Microsoft announced the rollout of a new AI‑driven weather forecasting platform designed to deliver hyper‑local predictions across India. The service leverages satellite data, machine‑learning models and real‑time sensor inputs to improve the accuracy of short‑term and seasonal forecasts.
The company said the enhanced forecasts will be made available to agricultural stakeholders through a free mobile app and an API for agritech firms. By providing more reliable rainfall and temperature outlooks, the tool aims to assist farmers in making informed decisions on sowing, irrigation and pest management.
Industry analysts note that better weather intelligence could reduce crop losses and improve yields, especially in regions prone to erratic monsoons. Microsoft plans to collaborate with Indian meteorological agencies and local farmer cooperatives to tailor the service to regional cropping patterns.
If widely adopted, the technology could complement existing government schemes that promote climate‑smart agriculture, potentially boosting farmer incomes and food security.
