Women’s activist groups known as Meira Paibi staged torch-lit processions across Manipur’s valley, pressing the state government to implement a National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Manipur’s valley witnessed a series of torch‑lit rallies on Saturday as Meira Paibi volunteers marched through towns and villages, urging authorities to introduce a National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state. The women, traditionally known for their anti‑alcohol and anti‑crime campaigns, carried torches and banners demanding a clear citizenship list to address alleged illegal migration.

Organisers said the rallies aim to pressure the state government and the Centre to act before the next electoral cycle, arguing that a transparent NRC will safeguard the rights of genuine residents. Police reported that the processions were largely peaceful, though traffic disruptions were noted in several localities.

State officials have not yet confirmed a timeline for any NRC exercise, but have acknowledged the growing public discourse. The Meira Paibi movement, rooted in grassroots activism, continues to mobilise support across the valley, highlighting the issue as a priority for local communities.

The rallies were captured on video and widely shared on social media, amplifying the call for a statewide NRC and drawing attention from national political observers.
