The finance department of Meghalaya has flagged the state's current budget estimates as unrealistic, citing a mismatch between projected revenues and expenditures. The department's assessment comes after the latest fiscal calculations for the 2024‑25 financial year were released.
According to the report, the projected fiscal deficit is lower than the target set by the state government, indicating a shortfall in anticipated revenue streams. At the same time, the total liabilities recorded exceed the statutory ceiling prescribed for the state, raising concerns about fiscal prudence.
State officials warned that the gap between estimates and actual financial capacity could compel the government to revisit spending priorities and explore additional revenue measures. The finance ministry has indicated that corrective steps will be taken to align future estimates with realistic revenue forecasts and to bring liabilities within permissible limits.
