Meghalaya's Excise Revenue Surges to Rs 500 crore in Eight Years, CM Says

State excise receipts have jumped to Rs 500 crore, nearly three times the amount recorded eight years ago, according to Meghalaya Chief Minister.
Meghalaya's excise department reported that total revenue from liquor and related duties reached Rs 500 crore in the latest financial cycle, a figure almost three times higher than the Rs 170 crore recorded eight years earlier, the chief minister announced on Tuesday.
The steep rise reflects a combination of factors, including higher tourist footfall in popular hill stations, an expanded network of licensed outlets, and stricter enforcement of tax collection across the state. Officials also noted that recent policy tweaks aimed at curbing illicit brewing have contributed to a broader tax base.
The chief minister praised the achievement as evidence of the state's growing fiscal health and said the additional revenue would be channelled into infrastructure projects, health services, and education initiatives. He urged continued compliance from traders and highlighted plans to modernise the excise monitoring system.
Analysts point out that Meghalaya's excise growth outpaces the national average for similar states, underscoring the region's potential as a revenue generator despite its modest population size.
