Tourism authorities in Meghalaya have denounced recent rally-related violence and cautioned that the unrest could deter visitors and affect the state's tourism sector.

The Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) and the state's Department of Tourism issued a joint statement condemning the violence that erupted during a political rally earlier this week. The agencies said the clashes, which resulted in injuries and property damage, are unacceptable and undermine the safety of tourists.

Officials warned that the perception of instability could discourage domestic and international travelers from choosing Meghalaya as a destination, especially during the peak monsoon trekking season. They urged law‑enforcement agencies to restore order swiftly and ensure that tourist sites remain secure.

The tourism bodies also appealed to political leaders to refrain from using public gatherings as flashpoints for conflict, emphasizing that Meghalaya's natural attractions and cultural heritage rely on a peaceful environment to thrive.

In the meantime, the MTDC announced that it will monitor the situation closely and work with local hotels and transport providers to mitigate any immediate disruptions for visitors already in the state.
