The Meghalaya government announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team to probe the assault on Assam tourist buses by student rally participants.

The state government of Meghalaya has ordered the creation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the recent incident in which vehicles carrying tourists from Assam were damaged during a student rally. The protest, organized by local student groups, turned violent when participants targeted the tourist buses, causing property damage and disrupting travel.

Authorities said the SIT will comprise senior police officers and officials from the state’s law‑enforcement agencies, tasked with gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and filing charges where appropriate. The team is expected to submit a report within the stipulated time frame, as directed by the chief minister.

The decision follows calls from tourism operators and local residents for a swift and transparent inquiry. Officials emphasized that the investigation aims to hold accountable those responsible while ensuring that such incidents do not deter tourism in the region.

No casualties were reported, but the incident raised concerns about the safety of inter‑state travel routes passing through Meghalaya. The SIT’s findings will inform any further legal action and possible policy measures to prevent future disruptions.
