Meghalaya has reported 574 new HIV infections over the past three months, with more than half attributed to casual sexual encounters.

According to data released by the state health authorities, Meghalaya recorded 574 new HIV cases in the last quarter.

The figure represents a significant rise compared to previous periods, though exact comparative numbers are not yet disclosed.

Of the new infections, 52% were linked to casual sexual encounters, indicating a growing trend in high‑risk behaviour.

Health officials have urged increased awareness and testing, especially in urban centres where casual sex is more prevalent.

The state’s health department is coordinating with NGOs to expand outreach and counselling services.
