Meghalaya's law‑enforcement agencies have logged a total of 783 theft cases from the start of the year through July, according to a recent police bulletin. The compilation covers all reported incidents of burglary, shoplifting and other forms of property theft across the state.
Among the 11 districts, East Khasi Hills recorded the highest number of cases, outpacing other regions by a noticeable margin. Officials said the district's urban centres, including Shillong, contribute to the elevated figures due to higher population density and commercial activity.
State police spokesperson said the department is monitoring the trend closely and has stepped up patrols in identified hotspots. While the overall theft count remains lower than in some neighboring states, authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity promptly.
