Meghalaya police confiscated 2,244 bottles of codeine syrup and detained two men from Assam on suspicion of illegal drug trafficking.

Meghalaya police announced the seizure of 2,244 bottles of codeine syrup during a raid that led to the arrest of two men identified as residents of Assam. The operation, carried out by the state’s law‑enforcement agencies, targeted a suspected drug‑trafficking network operating across state borders.

According to the police statement, the two suspects were apprehended while attempting to transport the large quantity of the cough suppressant, which is classified as a controlled substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The seized stock is believed to have been intended for illegal distribution in the region.

Investigators have opened a case under the NDPS Act and are conducting further inquiries to trace the source of the syrup and any additional accomplices. The men are currently in police custody pending formal charges.

The seizure underscores ongoing concerns about the diversion of pharmaceutical opioids for non‑medical use in the Northeast, prompting authorities to intensify monitoring and enforcement actions.
