Meghalaya Mandates Registration of Migrant Workers, Threatens Employers with Penalties

The Meghalaya government has announced a new rule that requires every migrant worker to register with state authorities before beginning employment. The directive, issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, aims to formalise the status of workers arriving from other states and ensure they receive legal protections.

Under the new regulation, workers must submit a registration form along with proof of identity, address, and employment contract. Employers are expected to verify the registration status of all their hires and maintain records for audit purposes.

Those employers who neglect to register their workers will face penalties ranging from monetary fines to potential suspension of business licenses. The government has stated that repeated violations could lead to more severe legal action.

Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to curb illegal employment practices and improve labour rights for migrant workers across the state.
