The Meghalaya government has announced a new scheme that ties financial grants to the academic performance of secondary and higher secondary schools across the state.
Shillong, Meghalaya – The state education department unveiled a performance‑linked grant scheme aimed at secondary (class 9‑10) and higher secondary (class 11‑12) schools. Under the programme, schools that achieve predefined academic targets, such as higher pass percentages in board examinations, will receive additional funding from the state treasury.
The initiative seeks to incentivise schools to improve teaching quality, reduce dropout rates and raise overall student outcomes. Funding allocations will be reviewed annually, with the first disbursement scheduled for the upcoming financial year.
Officials said the scheme will be administered through existing school management committees, which will submit performance data to the department. The government hopes the financial stimulus will encourage schools to adopt better pedagogical practices and invest in infrastructure.
