The Meghalaya government has introduced a digital marketplace aimed at linking cash‑crop growers directly with buyers, reducing intermediaries and improving price transparency.
Shillong, Meghalaya – The state government has rolled out a digital mandi platform designed to bring cash‑crop farmers and buyers onto a single online marketplace. The initiative targets producers of high‑value crops such as ginger, turmeric, and cardamom, offering them a direct channel to sell their harvest.
The platform provides real‑time price information, buyer listings and a secure transaction interface, aiming to cut down the role of traditional middlemen who often dictate lower prices. Farmers can access the service via a mobile app or web portal, with support centres set up across the state to assist with onboarding.
State officials said the digital mandi is part of a broader push to modernise agriculture in Meghalaya, leveraging technology to enhance income for smallholders. The system will initially operate in pilot districts before scaling statewide.
If successful, the platform could serve as a model for other northeastern states seeking to digitise agricultural marketing and improve farmer earnings.
