Shillong, Meghalaya – Officials from the Meghalaya government and representatives of the KSU met earlier this week to formalise a collaborative fact‑finding mission concerning the public hearing held on Shree Cement's proposed project. Both parties said the investigation will examine whether the hearing adhered to statutory requirements and will document any procedural lapses.
The decision follows criticism from local groups who questioned the transparency of the hearing process and the environmental impact assessments presented by the cement firm. By launching an independent probe, the government aims to reassure the public that due process is being observed.
The KSU, a regional stakeholder body, will provide field observations and gather testimonies from affected residents, while the state’s Department of Environment and Forests will supply technical data. A joint report is expected within the next six weeks, after which appropriate remedial actions will be considered.
