The 2026 monsoon season in Meghalaya recorded only 40% of the rainfall typically expected, according to the Highland Post.

Meghalaya recorded a monsoon rainfall total that is just 40% of the long‑term average for the 2026 season, the Highland Post reported. Meteorological data show a sharp shortfall compared with the typical monsoon output for the state.

The state normally receives heavy precipitation during the June‑September monsoon, with averages ranging between 2,500 and 3,000 millimetres annually. This year’s figure represents a deficit of roughly 1,500 to 1,800 millimetres, underscoring an unusually dry spell.

Authorities in Shillong have noted the shortfall and are monitoring water reservoirs and agricultural zones closely. While the report does not detail immediate impacts, officials have warned that reduced rainfall could affect hydro‑electric generation and crop sowing schedules if the trend persists.
