The Meghalaya state government has launched digital tools and satellite mapping to prepare for the nationwide Census slated for 2027.
Meghalaya’s Department of Statistics announced a rollout of technology‑enabled processes to ensure a precise population count for the 2027 Census. The plan includes the use of geographic information systems (GIS), satellite imagery and mobile data‑collection apps to map remote villages and verify household information.
State officials are coordinating with the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India to align the new methods with the central census framework. Training workshops are being conducted for field enumerators on the use of tablets and GPS devices, aiming to reduce manual errors and speed up data aggregation.
The technology push is also intended to address challenges posed by Meghalaya’s rugged terrain and dispersed settlements, which have historically complicated enumeration. By leveraging real‑time data validation and cloud‑based storage, the state hopes to deliver a more accurate demographic picture ahead of the national count.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by several Indian states to modernise census operations, with Meghalaya positioning itself as an early adopter of digital enumeration techniques for the upcoming 2027 exercise.
