Meghalaya cuts electricity losses to 10.76% and aims to connect 55,628 more homes

The Meghalaya government has lowered power transmission losses to 10.76% and set a target to supply electricity to an additional 55,628 households.
Meghalaya's electricity department reported that the state’s power loss ratio has fallen to 10.76 per cent, a significant improvement over previous years. The reduction reflects the impact of recent technical upgrades, stricter monitoring and the rollout of smart metering across the network.
State officials have announced a plan to extend reliable supply to 55,628 more households in the coming months. The expansion will focus on underserved rural blocks and newly electrified colonies, using the saved energy to fund the additional connections.
The lower loss figure is expected to translate into lower tariffs for consumers and a boost to the state's overall power adequacy. It also aligns with the central government's goal of reducing transmission and distribution losses nationwide.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise Meghalaya's power infrastructure, improve billing efficiency and encourage greater private sector participation in the state's energy sector.
