The Meghalaya government has initiated an audit of its coke oven plants to scrutinise the coal sources used in their operations.
The state has ordered a comprehensive audit of all coke oven plants operating within Meghalaya to verify the origin of the coal supplied to these facilities.
The audit, conducted by the Department of Mines and Minerals, will examine procurement records, transport logs and on‑site operations to ensure compliance with national regulations.
Officials say the review follows growing concerns that some coal may be sourced from unregistered or environmentally non‑compliant mines.
The findings could lead to corrective measures, penalties or changes in supply contracts, the department noted.
The audit is expected to be completed by the end of the month, with results to be shared with the public and industry stakeholders.
