The Chief Minister of Meghalaya inaugurated a new Centre of Excellence for Eri weaving in Ri Bhoi district, aiming to boost the traditional craft and provide training to local artisans.

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Conrad Sangma, formally opened a Centre of Excellence for Eri weaving at a site in Ri Bhoi district on Tuesday. The facility is set to become a hub for preserving and promoting the region’s unique handloom tradition.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several state officials, local artisans, and representatives from the Ministry of Textiles. Sangma highlighted the importance of Eri, a natural fiber known for its softness and durability, in the cultural heritage of Meghalaya.

The centre will offer skill‑development programmes, market linkages and research support to weavers. It is expected to create employment opportunities for women and young people in the district.

Officials say the initiative will help sustain the craft, increase income for local families and attract tourists interested in authentic handloom products.
